CIVIC CLUBS
There are organizations in the College Grove community that have meant much to the area through the years. They are the
Owen Hill Masonic Lodge, College Grove School Booster Club, College Grove Book Club, and College Grove Lions Club.
The Owen Hill Masonic Lodge organized in 1849 on the Owen Hill farm located on Jordan Road. Later it moved to a building in Allisona. Members met there until 1955 when that building burned. At that time, the Lodge had a building constructed in College Grove on Main Street. They meet in this building now as the 137 year old Masonic Lodge continues to serve in College Grove.
Another club that began about sixty-five years ago is the College Grove Book Club. It is said that it was organized so the young mothers could meet to exchange books and ideas. The same method of reading and exchanging books continues today with its twenty-four members.
The College Grove Booster Club was organized as the first Parent-Teacher Association in Williamson County in the 1930s. There was a change to the name in 1967 when the club left the National Parent-Teachers Association. Members have worked through the years to provide much needed funds for the school.
The College Grove Lions Club was chartered in 1948 and is the organization that has sponsored many projects which have improved life in the community.
These activities include establishing a Volunteer Fire Department and promoting the water system. One big project was the purchase of land that is now used for a recreation area. The Lions Club Field has been used for District and 4-H cow shows, various entertainments, a football field for the school, and a summer recreation program that includes many baseball and softball teams. A project now under discussion is to sponsor a Senior Citizens organization.
Along with these and many other services to the community, the Lions Club has continued to support Lions International projects—the best know being their sight-service to the blind and visually handicapped.
The citizens of College Grove have given their support and cooperation to these groups as they serve the area.
